Nursing Home Placement is not the End of Family Care

Some family members feel lost when they place their loved one in a nursing home.  Family members may mistakenly perceive that the family’s primary care role has ended as long-term care looms larger than life.  The transition to nursing homes is more than a little intimidating, more so if an elder has resisted the life transition to long-term care.  There may be an initial wall of family silence or shame surrounding nursing home transitions as elders and their closest family members initially experience feelings of powerlessness, hopelessness or guilt.
