Saving for our own caregiving

Saving for retirement was fairly painless when I was married. My husband worked for the state and money was automatically put aside for retirement as one of his benefits as a physician. The only pinch was putting money into my own SEP IRA according to my freelance writer income at the end of the year. Furthermore, my husband had been investing separate retirement funds accumulated from outside the state retirement system and those investments had done well.

Is a PACE program in your future?

Having coffee with a friend the other day when she mentioned that she disliked the choices for her aunt of assisted living or eventually even a long-term care setting, due to some chronic medical conditions. I asked her if she had ever heard of a PACE program. Like most people, she said, “No, what is that”?

CMS “Ask Medicare” site helpful

Is this covered by Medicare?

Questions about Medicare coverage come my way daily. Generally, the question is about in-home agency care, assisted living or nursing home care. I can give people a general idea of what Medicare may or may not cover, but Medicare and/or Medicaid coverage depends on many variables, sometimes including which state you live in. Therefore, for information beyond the extremely general, I must direct people to the Medicare site.

Feel Like There Is No One on Your Side? Try a Patient Advocate!

Do you have the same stacks of papers that I do cluttering up my kitchen table and many other flat surfaces? I’m sure you do. I’m not talking about the routine bills (they take up plenty of their own space) or the pictures of the grandkids, I mean the annoying piles of things erroneously called “explanation of benefits”, “this is not a bill” or “your easy-to- read provider statement”.

Where are Those Eldercare Advocacy Voices?
