Winners of Share Why You Care Contest

by ECL Staff

Thanks to all those who participated in our contest by submitting stories or reading and voting for stories. We asked you to tell us about your caregiving experience, both the good and the bad, and we thank you all for your honest and touching submissions. And, now, here are our Share Why You Care Contest winners.

Grand Prize Winner

Congratulations to our Grand Prize Winner, Judy Byrd. In her story, “Shower of Blessing,” Judy described the challenges and the enlightening moments she has experienced as a caregiver for her mother-in-law, who suffers from declining health and Alzheimer’s disease.

“Being a caregiver is extremely difficult at times,” Judy told Eldercarelink.com. “Thank you so much for the opportunity to share, I truly hope my story will help someone else.”

Judy’s prize: A $250 Visa gift card toward a spa-day to relax and unwind, plus $150 for in-home care for her loved one while she’s away. Judy also won a $50 Visa gift card for being a random weekly winner.

First Runner Up

Jennifer Chan won a $200 Visa gift card for her inspiring story titled “Caregiver Cheerleader,” where she writes: “Grandma teaches me how to provide unconditional love every day and I look forward to caring for her all the time.”

She describes all the daily tasks involved with caregiving as well as the learning experiences and the rewards: “Caregiving has taught me about patience, compassion, communication, and humanity. As a new caregiver, I didn’t have a handbook or guidelines on how to take care of my grandma. I learned almost everything by trial and error.” Jennifer writes about the need to support other caregivers and their families. She ends her post with the words: “Caregiving changed my life. I found my passion. I’m now a caregiver cheerleader!”

Second Runner Up

Linda Ratz-Thompson won a $100 Visa gift card for writing about her life as a caregiver in “Caregiving: Yes I do WORK !” Linda’s submission got right to the point: “Oftentimes people ask me what I do for a living? I tell them I take care of my parents.”

Congratulations to Linda and our thanks for sharing your description of your caregiving experience.
