Basketball legend Pat Summitt reported her Alzheimer’s diagnosis last August to the public nearly as soon as she knew she had the disease. Summitt, who has 1,000+ career wins, 15 SEC championships, 8 national championships and an unrelenting, competitive spirit, has treated her diagnosis as another challenge.
In a recent interview with Robin Roberts for ABC News, Summitt reveals that she has no regrets about sharing her condition and that she received a letter of support from former First Lady Nancy Reagan. The full interview will be aired this evening on ABC News’ “20/20.”
If you tune in, you’ll hear Summitt talk about seeing the televised Ronald Reagan story announcing his Alzheimer’s diagnosis as she was working out. Summitt remembers, “…And, you know, first he did not come clean as to what [he] really had. So I sat there and watched it that day, and I remember I had tears coming down my eyes, and I said, ‘Well, that could be me.’”
Now, the diagnosis is hers to cope with. However, Summitt is handling the public part of it in an unflinching, public manner. Watch the interview on ABC News’ 20/20 this Friday at 10 p.m. ET for more on Summitt’s Alzheimer’s journey.
