“Alzheimer’s Daily News” Great Source for Studies and More

by Carol Bradley Bursack, Editor-in-Chief

AgelessDesign.org is one of several organizations, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Alzheimer’s Association TrialMatch, which I covered in Alzheimer’s Association Drug “TrialMatch” Is an Exceptional Service, that help me uncover news about studies.

The folks at Ageless Design work quietly and efficiently, without the huge budget or the public notoriety of sites like those mentioned above. They get the word out on Alzheimer’s disease, and I enjoy shining a light on their work from time to time.

Through Ageless Design, you can subscribe to their newsletter, “The Alzheimer’s Daily News.” The site is able to operate as it does because of the support from a quality store where people shopping for elders, particularly those with dementia or other limiting diseases, can find a large and ever growing array of products that can help make life easier for everyone involved.

Since we’re in the middle of the holiday season for giving, this is a great time to check out www.alzstore.com. In one of the latest issues of “The Alzheimer’s Daily News,” many gift ideas are suggested. These items are offered at their store as well as other places. Included in the suggestions are:

A warm, soft robe
A picture album
A warm sweater
A night gown
Photos of the family
Soft, comfortable slippers
Old books on topics of interest
Costume jewelry

The gift that really caught my eye was a simple TV remote control. My dad had dementia, and very poor vision coupled with numb fingers. Using a TV remote control was nearly impossible for him, yet he kept trying.

At the time, options were limited. I scrounged the Internet and covered our community like a person on a scavenger hunt, but nowhere could I find just a simple TV remote control. One time, I did find a control with big buttons and somewhat fewer options, but that broke in a month and I couldn’t replace it. The Alzheimer’s Store now has such a remote under “Gifts That Solve a Problem.” It’s too late for Dad, but this remote may be just what you are looking for.

The store site offers DVDs of classic TV shows and movies, plus CDs with music many of our elders love. These gifts are invaluable tools for entertainment, as well as distraction during times when an elder with Alzheimer’s is obsessing about something we can’t provide. The store also offers many practical care items such as pill reminders and special clocks.

Do yourself a favor and check out The Alzheimer’s Daily News and the Alzheimer’s Store that supports this worthy effort. These folks are “the real deal.”
